Good news! We are sailing through BC’s restart plan to bring us back together, just in time for summer! Whether you are a local or a fellow islander here for a visit, Port Hardy has many great activities to do with the family.

Here are some suggestions from Visit Port Hardy team member Samantha!

Grab a fishing pole and head to the Rotary family fishing park located off the Seagate Pier. There is a viewing hole to cast off in or watch the fish swim by. Maybe you’ll get lucky and catch some dinner! Or just sit, relax and enjoy the view.

Take a leisurely walk along the Quatse River loop and estuary trail. Painted rocks hidden by artsy locals can be found throughout and are fun for the kids to spy along your walk. Sights of nesting bald eagles, kingfishers and great blue herons are not uncommon.

Don’t feel like cooking? Head down to Macy’s Place, located across from the Visitor Centre. Grab a burger to go or dine out on their picnic patio. Their fish tacos are delicious! When your done you can walk along the seawall, enjoy views across the Queen Charlotte Strait and read stories telling you some of the history of the area.

Be a hometown tourist with Samantha this May long weekend.

May long weekend is finally here! While some of us may have had plans to travel, current travel restrictions are keeping us closer to home. This can be the perfect time to have a “staycation”!

Here are just a few of the amazing adventures you can have right in your own backyard.

Try a luxury hotel or a cozy cabin getaway

Why not book at a local hotel or resort? Ecoscape Cabins and Bear Cove Cottages are modern and cozy with great views. Enjoy barbequing for dinner, relax by the fire pit in the evening or take a stroll down to the beach and see if you can spy some of the local wildlife. You could also stay a night at the Kwa’lilas Hotel and enjoy a fabulous meal and a beautiful room. You may only be a short way from home, but a simple change of scenery can make a world of difference.

Have a new adventure outdoors

Get out and find an activity you have never done before. Try a different bike route, find a viewpoint or explore a new walking trail. The Fort Rupert trail is a point-to-point trail with gravel and boardwalk throughout, unique trees and a beautiful little lake to stop for a break or have an afternoon picnic. Don’t forget the beaches!

Port Hardy is home to many great beaches and we get some gorgeous sunsets. Grab some hotdogs and marshmallows and head out with the fam for an evening beach fire! Storey’s beach is beautiful and sandy and goes on forever when the tide is out. Maybe you will get lucky and find a moon snail shell. Airport Beach has great views of some mainland glacial mountains and a tire swing for the kids to play. Hang out after dark for some star gazing. This time of year, if you look up you can spot the Pisces and Capricorn constellations.
